C1
Articles in abstract and fixed uses
At C1, article choice is rarely just about countability. It is about how French frames an idea, whether the noun is generic or specific, and whether the expression is lexicalized.
Main patterns
- Use the definite article when French treats the noun as a known category: J'aime le silence.
- Use the article in many abstract or stylistic expressions: prendre la parole, avoir de la valeur, faire preuve de patience.
- Use un / une when the noun means a type, instance, or role: c'est une ironie, elle a un charme discret.
- Use du / de la / de l' for a true partitive — an unspecified amount: boire du thé, manger de la soupe.
- Bare de (no article) marks material or a general topic in fixed expressions: un mur de pierre, parler de politique.
Watch out
English often drops articles where French keeps them, but French also uses articles in idioms that must be learned as chunks. The choice is semantic, not mechanical.
