Negative sentences with ne…pas
You already know ne … pas wraps the verb. At A2 the key is where the two halves go in the past tense and with infinitives — plus what happens to the article.
The rule
- Simple tense: ne + verb + pas — Je ne mange pas.
- Passé composé: the halves wrap the auxiliary, not the participle — *Je **n'*ai pas mangé.
- Before an infinitive: keep them together — Je préfère ne pas partir.
Key points
- After a negative, un/une/du/de la/des become de: *Il a un chat → Il **n'*a pas de chat.
- ne → n' before a vowel or silent h: *On **n'*habite pas ici.
Watch out
- ❌ Je n'ai mangé pas → ✅ Je n'ai pas mangé (wrap the auxiliary)
- ❌ Il n'a pas un chat → ✅ Il n'a pas de chat
- ❌ Tu as pas fini (in writing) → ✅ Tu n'as pas fini
In context
- Elle ne parle pas anglais. — She doesn't speak English.
- Nous n'allons pas au cinéma. — We're not going to the cinema.
- Ils n'ont pas vu le film. — They didn't see the film.
- Je ne veux pas partir. — I don't want to leave.
