Conditional nuance and hypothetical meaning

At B2, the conditional is not just for politeness. It also signals distance, hypothesis, and reported possibility.

Main patterns

  • polite requests: Je voudrais, pourriez-vous
  • hypothetical results: cela changerait la situation
  • reported or uncertain information: il serait malade, elle aurait dit que
  • past conditional: j'aurais aimé, nous aurions dû

Watch out

Do not use the conditional simply because English sounds less direct. Use it when French wants a hypothetical, softened, or reported tone.

Example 1

Choose the sentence that correctly expresses a polite request.

  • Pouvez-vous m'aider un instant ?
  • Pourriez-vous m'aider un instant ?
  • Vous pourriez m'aider un instant.
  • M'aiderez-vous un instant ?
