Practice French

C1

Counter-argument framing and concession

At C1, French does not just say yes or no to an idea. It often concedes one point, softens disagreement, and then moves the argument forward.

Main patterns

  • certes ... mais ...: concede one point before contrasting it
  • cela dit: a smooth pivot to a different angle
  • loin de là: reject an exaggerated interpretation
  • non pas que + subjunctive: deny one motive or cause before giving the real one

Why it matters

This type of framing is common in essays, debates, and careful speech. It helps French sound balanced instead of blunt.

Watch out

Do not overuse English-style direct contrast. In French, the concession often comes first, then the correction or nuance.

Try three examples

  • Certes, le projet est réaliste, parce qu'il est ambitieux.
