Passive voice and focus
At B2, the passive voice is useful when the action matters more than the person doing it. French uses être + past participle for the passive voice.
Main patterns
- Le livre est lu par des étudiants.
- La porte a été fermée.
- Les décisions seront prises demain.
Common uses
- highlight the result: Le message a été envoyé
- hide or de-emphasize the agent: La règle est souvent oubliée
- keep formal or objective tone: La demande a été acceptée
Watch out
Do not confuse the passive with the passé composé. In the passive, être describes the state or event of receiving the action, and the past participle agrees with the subject.

Example 1
Choose the sentence that correctly uses the passive voice.
- La porte a fermée.
- La porte a été fermée.
- La porte est fermé.
- La porte a été fermez.
