Practice French

A2

Future proche and near plans

At A2, French learners often talk about plans that are already decided or about things that are about to happen. French usually uses aller + infinitive for this.

Main pattern

  • subject + aller + infinitive: Je vais sortir.
  • common time markers: ce soir, demain, tout à l'heure, la semaine prochaine
  • the meaning is close to English "going to" or "about to"

Examples

  • Je vais appeler ma mère ce soir.
  • Nous allons prendre le bus.
  • Tu vas comprendre bientôt.

Watch out

Do not conjugate the infinitive after aller. The helper verb changes, but the main verb stays in infinitive form.

Try three examples

Example 1

Select the sentence that correctly shows a near-future plan.

  • Je vais téléphoner ce soir.
  • Je téléphone vais ce soir.
  • Je vais téléphoné ce soir.
  • Je vais téléphonera ce soir.
Show answer

Je vais téléphoner ce soir.

I am going to call tonight.

Example 2

Je vais étudier ___.

Show answer

ce soir

I am going to study tonight.

Example 3

Nous ___ partir demain.
