Practice French

A2

Direct and indirect object pronouns

At A2, learners start replacing nouns with object pronouns. The main task is to choose the right pronoun and place it before the verb.

Core forms

  • direct objects: le, la, les
  • indirect objects: lui, leur
  • common companions: me, te, nous, vous

Basic rule

In simple present and passé composé, the pronoun usually comes before the conjugated verb: Je le vois, Je lui parle, Je l'ai vu.

Watch out

English often puts the object after the verb. French usually does not when a pronoun is used.
