Saturday morning, a delivery person rings at Thomas’s door, on the second floor. He holds out a large brown parcel and asks for a signature. Thomas reads the label: the name is not his; it is Madame Ortiz, on the third floor. Thomas hesitates for a second, then decides to go up. He climbs the stairs with the parcel. Nobody answers. He slips a note under the door and goes back down. In the evening, Madame Ortiz knocks at his door. She is coming back from her sister’s and has been looking for this package since noon. Inside there are books for her grandson. She offers Thomas a lemon cake. The next day, a child’s drawing is stuck on his mailbox: thank you, neighbor.
