Indirect questions and question words

At B2, French often turns a direct question into an embedded question. This is useful for polite requests, explanations, and reported curiosity.

Main patterns

  • savoir si: Je ne sais pas si elle vient.
  • demander où / quand / pourquoi / comment: Je demande où il habite.
  • se demander si / où / quand: Je me demande si elle comprend.

Key difference

Indirect questions keep normal statement word order after the question word: Je ne sais pas où il habite.

Watch out

Do not keep direct-question inversion inside an indirect question. French switches back to statement order after the question word.

Try three examples

Show answer
