B2
Reported speech and tense shifts
At B2, French indirect speech is more than changing quotation marks. You often need to adjust pronouns, time words, and sometimes the tense.
Main patterns
- dire que introduces a statement: Il a dit qu'il était fatigué.
- demander si introduces a yes/no question: Elle a demandé si nous venions.
- demander où / quand / pourquoi introduces a wh-question: Il a demandé où nous allions.
- After a past reporting verb, French often shifts the original tense one step back: present to imparfait, future to conditional.
Common shifts
- Je viens → il a dit qu'il venait
- Je viendrai → il a dit qu'il viendrait
- J'ai fini → il a dit qu'il avait fini
- Je suis ici → il a dit qu'il était là
Watch out
The shift is not always mechanical, but B2 learners should be able to manage the usual backshifts and choose the right reporting structure. Do not use si for open questions, and do not keep the original pronouns blindly.
Try three examples
Example 1
Report these words with conventional tense backshift; keep the person and time references indicated by the translation: «Je viendrai demain.»
- Elle a dit qu'elle vient demain.
- Elle a dit qu'elle viendra demain.
- Elle a dit qu'elle viendrait demain.
- Elle a dit qu'elle venait demain.
Show answer
Elle a dit qu'elle viendrait demain.
She said she would come tomorrow.
Example 2
The reporting verb needs the right conjunction:
Elle a dit ___elle partait tôt.
Show answer
qu'
She said that she was leaving early.
Example 3
Complete with the imparfait form of «être» that fits the sentence.
Il a dit qu'il ___ fatigué.
Show answer
était
He said that he was tired.
