Past participle agreement

Past participle agreement is an important B1 topic because French does not treat every past tense form the same way.

With être

When the passé composé uses être, the past participle usually agrees with the subject.

  • Elle est arrivée.
  • Nous sommes partis.
  • Elles sont restées à la maison.

With avoir

With avoir, the past participle usually does not agree.

  • J'ai acheté les fleurs.
  • Ils ont vendu la voiture.

But if the direct object comes before the verb, agreement can appear:

  • Les fleurs que j'ai achetées
  • La voiture que j'ai vendue

Watch out

Do not add agreement just because the noun is plural. Agreement depends on the auxiliary and on whether the object comes before the verb.
